What is Puberphonia (Mutational Falsetto)?

During the transition period from childhood to adulthood, especially in boys, a marked voice change occurs. This change occurs in a very short time in some individuals and in others over a longer period of time. Rarely, this transition may not be complete and the individual continues to speak with an unstable, variable and unpredictable voice tone, experiencing a continuous or intermittent high-pitched voice. This condition is called puberphonia or mutational falsetto. Patients with mutational falsetto often limit their social activities and speak less because they cannot control their voice. Only voice therapy techniques can treat mutational falsetto, unless there is an accompanying psychiatric or hormonal disorder. In rare cases, surgery may be the treatment of choice.
